High-definition television

  (Redirected from HDTV)

High-definition television (or HDTV) is a digital television broadcasting system with higher resolution than traditional television systems (standard-definition TV, or SDTV). HDTV is digitally broadcast; the earliest implementations used analog broadcasting, but today digital television (DTV) signals are used, requiring less bandwidth due to digital video compression.

How to Improve Your Digital TV Signal

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging Step1
Adjust your antenna. If you are using a converter box, you can use the signal strength indicator to monitor improvement. If someone is on the roof doing this for you, you can communicate by cell phone to make things easier- but be careful! You might want to hire someone to do this for you. It's dangerous on the roof.
Step2
If you find that you need to frequently re-adjust the aim of your rooftop antenna, you may want to purchase a rotor that allows you to position the antenna from inside the house.
Step3
An FCC website about digital tv's and antennas recommends keeping the length of antenna wire between the antenna and the receiver as short as possible.
Step4
The same FCC website recommends that you find out if you are located near a broadcast tower. Being located too close to a broadcast tower can actually interfere with your signal. To find the location of the towers near you, go to antennaweb.org. You'll be able to input your location and see the locations of towers near you. If you are too close to a broadcast tower, it may help to buy a signal attenuator.
Step5
You can also use antennaweb.org to determine the best antenna for you. Enter your address into the site (you don't have to fill in the box that requests your name, and you don't have to request to be put on their mailing list for this to work). The site will display the locations of towers near you, the direction you should point your antenna to receive each station's signal, and which type of antenna is recommended for each station.
